The Atlanta Hawks selected 20-year old shooting guard Sergiy Galdyr with the 49th pick in the NBA Draft. Galdyr wasn’t expected to be drafted so maybe the Hawks have some inside information on him. He averaged 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game last season in a pro league in the Ukraine. He looks like a developmental prospect.

The Atlanta Hawks selected 21-year old combo guard Jeff Teague with the 19th pick of the NBA Draft last night. Teague played in 61 games in his two seasons at Wake Forest in which he averaged 16.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assist and 1.9 steals per game. Teague is a good long range shooter as he nailed 42.1% of his shots from behind the three point arc in his college career. Look for Teague to get a lot of minutes backing up both Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson as a rookie.

The Atlanta Hawks acquire Jamal Crawford from the Warriors

The Hawks have acquired 29-year old point guard Jamal Crawford from the Golden State Warriors for 31-year old point guard Speedy Claxton and 24-year old point guard Acie Law. Crawford will move into Mike Bibby’s old spot as the starting point guard for the 2009-2010 season. He played in 65 games (all starts) for the Knicks & Warriors last season and he averaged 38.1 minutes, 19.7 points, 3.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game. Crawford has now played in 597 games (393 starts) in his NBA career and he has averaged 32.6 minutes, 15.2 points, 2.7 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 1.0 steal per game.

Speedy Claxton only played in 2 games (0 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 7.5 minutes, 2.5 points and 1.5 assists per game. Acie Law was the Hawks’ first round pick two years ago and he was a bust for them. Law played in 55 games (1 start) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 10.2 minutes, 2.9 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Law appeared in 111 games (7 starts) in his career with the Hawks and he averaged 12.8 minutes, 3.6 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.8 assists per game. This was a good move for the Hawks.

Will the Atlanta Hawks ante’ up after a successful season?

Blogged under Big Hawks News,Bloglockers,Front Page,General by alleyoop on Wednesday 24 June 2009 at 6:05 pm

The Hawks have four key free agents (Mike Bibby, Flip Murray, Zaza Pachulia and Marvin Williams) and it will be interesting to see if they ante’ up or not. Bibby is the most important player of this bunch. He played in 79 games (all starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 34.7 minutes, 14.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game. If the Hawks don’t sign Bibby it will be imperative that they acquire a decent veteran point guard to lead this team if they want to contend for the playoffs in 2009-2010. Marvin Williams is a restricted free agent but he could get a big offer from another NBA team and it will be interesting to see what the Hawks do if that happens. Williams played in 61 games (59 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 34.3 minutes, 13.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game. Flip Murray was outstanding off the bench for the Hawks last season. He played in 80 games (2 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 24.7 minutes, 12.2 points, 2.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game. The Hawks would be smart to try to retain Murray if the price is right. Center Zaza Pachulia has rubbed some in the Hawks’ organization the wrong way but he’s still a solid player. He played in 77 games (26 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 19.1 minutes, 6.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game. The Hawks also have four young restricted free agents who will likely to be easy to retain. C/F Solomon Jones played in 63 games (0 starts) last season for the Hawks and he averaged 10.7 minutes, 3.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 0.2 assists per game. Fellow 2nd year player Mario West (SG) played in 53 games (5 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 0.8 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.4 assists per game. SG/SF Thomas Gardner played in 16 games (0 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 16.1 minutes, 1.5 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game. Small forward Othello Hunter also played in 16 games (0 starts) for the Hawks last season and he averaged 5.8 minutes, 1.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.1 assists per game.
